Clayton, Missouri was recently voted the second-best place to live in Missouri. It was named for Ralph Clayton, a farmer from Virginia who in 1877 donated land to establish a county seat after St. Louis elected to separate from the county. For its first few years, the small villages' main economic activities were based on the goings-on at the courthouse, but within a few years, a trolley service, school, and newspaper had become established. The first City Hall was built in 1931, and in the '50s, the town was in the middle of an economic boom that saw the establishment of a downtown district full of high-rise buildings.
