University City, MO

Named for its proximity to the prestigious Washington University, University City is small, but it’s a powerhouse for being a desirable place to be. Originally founded in 1903 by publisher Edward Gardner Lewish around his publishing complex where he churned out Woman’s Magazine and Woman’s Farm Journal, many of the historic buildings still standing there today were built by Lewis. Three years later, when it was incorporated as a city, he was a natural choice to serve as its first mayor.

Though the city is just under six square miles, there are 35,000 that call this bustling St. Louis suburb home, making it the city with the 14th heaviest population density in the state with just under 6,000 per square mile. Much of University City is zoned for municipal use, including the 85-acre Heman Park, which has a public pool, community center, and recreation center. The Ruth Park public golf course is surrounded by nature trails. Take in the scenery while you tee off and try to score under par in this well-maintained hidden gem of a course.

The Delmar Loop is extremely popular with locals and visitors alike and has been named one of the ten great streets in America. It has more restaurants, stores, and entertainment options than someone could visit in a week. It got its name from the streetcars that headed west and “looped around” before going to other county areas. Today, the happening eight-block space has over 145 unique shops, galleries, music venues, cafés, and more.

The district has the St. Louis Walk of Fame, where celebrities who have contributed to society and call the surrounding area home are honored in the city’s version of the Hollywood Star plaques. Maya Angelou, Yogi Berra, and Miles Davis are just a few of the famous names lining the sidewalk of The Loop. Blueberry Hill, a restaurant with an attached concert venue called The Duck Room, has been hosting live music since the opening in 1972. Fast forward just a few years, and Chuck Berry played the room over 200 times, along with many other artists from the era like Miles Davis and others.

Fitz’ Root Beer is one of “America’s Original Soda Microbrewery,” where guests can take a guided tour and finish up by watching the nationally beloved soda being bottled on vintage equipment while dining in the brand restaurant. https://fitzsrootbeer.com / Pin-Up Bowling, which is a small, intimate bowling alley with a top-shelf bar and classic Americana-style decorations, isn’t a place you want to miss. Whether you want to practice your lane movement and form or relax and have dinner, this is an excellent place to kick back and enjoy the atmosphere.
